Definition: digital ledger

A computerized file of financial data typically organized by accounts. Essentially, all computer-based financial accounts are digital ledgers. However, the term came into public prominence after cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin emerged in the 2010s. A crypto digital ledger uses a blockchain architecture, which is entirely different and much more complex than all other financial databases. See cryptocurrency and blockchain.
